I love bringing my work home with me. As an interior designer I work hard to make my clients’ houses their homes but I also love designing and decorating my own home. However, like many of my clients’ homes, my own has its fair share of design challenges. The largest was figuring out how to decorate an angled wall.
Our media room, while large, has some odd wall angles. Because it is on the second floor, the ceiling tapers down to meet the wall thus reducing the height of the ceiling at the far end of the room. It is such a steep angle that we couldn’t do much on that side of the room. In my effort to make the house truly speak to my design and decor tastes, we came up with a creative solution – install custom built-ins!
We wanted to use the space as a media room so having custom builtins made perfect sense. I set to work designing the space so it would make the most of the angled wall while also giving us the space we needed for storage and a TV. I also wanted to leave room for a few shelving units and an area to install a small fridge. What media room is complete without easy access to your favorite beverages!
Once the design was finalized we hired a local cabinet maker to build the lower custom cabinets. Once those were installed, we built the rest! It truly was designed as we went. I used the leftover pecky cypress boards I had from my den ceiling as the backsplash to add a fun component to the overall design. Once those were installed we hired a friend, Jeff Perry, to paint the entire structure. Jeff uses an imported Italian waterborne product that is actually a powder that can be tinted to any color and creates a solid durable finish. It has no harmful chemicals and low VOCs! The finishing touches of punched gold metal sheets were added to the top, the TV and Fridge were installed, and a few family pieces were added to the shelves. Also, painting the angled wall the color of the wall and not the ceiling makes the space feel much larger and disguises the design challenge it offers. Check out the before photos. We love the way this turned out and have been thoroughly enjoying our new media room ever since!
Designing a challenging space (like decorating an angled wall) can be exactly that, challenging. Sometimes it takes a little creativity to make a space work for you and your family.
