Most people think a design project starts the moment something visible happens. A truck pulls up with new furniture. A wall comes down. Ground breaks on a new build. But the process actually begins much earlier, starting with the consultation and planning that happens before any of the visible work begins. If you missed Part 1, [read “What to Expect During an Interior Design Consultation with JL Signature Designs” here].
From there, the project moves into a phase that plays a major role in how smoothly everything comes together: selection. By the end of this post, you’ll understand what the selection phase actually is, why it happens before the visible work begins, and why it matters whether you’re furnishing a room, renovating one, or building a house from the ground up.

The selection phase is where every material, fixture, and furnishing gets chosen and confirmed before the visible work begins. Fabrics, finishes, fixtures, furniture, hardware, lighting. Not roughly decided. Confirmed, sourced, and accounted for.
It sounds like a small, administrative step. It’s not. It’s the difference between a project that moves with confidence and one that stalls every time a decision gets made in the middle of things instead of before them.
Furnishing. It’s tempting to think furnishing is the easy part, since nothing structural is changing. But a room furnished piece by piece, decision by decision, rarely holds together. Selections made together, as a full palette, are what make a space feel put together instead of collected in a hurry. This is also where sourcing matters most. I don’t shop retail or big online vendors, so the pieces I bring you often aren’t sitting in a warehouse ready to ship tomorrow. They’re worth the wait.
Remodels. This is where the stakes are highest, because a remodel involves other people’s schedules. Trades sit idle waiting on a decision. Lead times on backordered tile or plumbing fixtures get discovered too late to solve gracefully. Decisions made under pressure, standing in a half finished kitchen, are rarely the decisions you’d have made with time to think.
New builds. A new build has the most decisions and the least room for error, because so many selections are tied directly to construction timing. Cabinetry needs confirmed dimensions before it’s built. Plumbing fixtures need to be chosen before rough in. When selections lag behind the build schedule, the build schedule is the one that suffers.

Every delay has a cost, even when nobody’s writing a change order. Idle trades, rushed decisions, and materials chosen out of desperation instead of excitement all add up, and they add up faster than most people expect. Time is money in every one of these project types, and indecision is expensive in all of them.
Every choice gets made against the full picture, not in isolation. A tile chosen on its own can look perfect in the showroom and wrong once it’s next to the cabinetry and countertop selected separately. Selections need to happen together, whatever the project type.
Lead times get checked before anything is finalized. Some materials take weeks. Some take months. Knowing that upfront means the schedule that gets built is a real one, not an optimistic guess.
The budget gets reconciled as you go, not at the end. Selections should be checked against the budget as they’re made, not tallied up as a surprise once everything is already ordered.
The most valuable work I do on any project, furnishing, remodel, or new build, often happens before the part clients can see. That’s not what shows up in the after photos, but it’s what determines whether the whole process feels calm or chaotic. Two projects with the same scope can feel completely different depending on how much got decided before the visible work started, and honestly, that’s my favorite part of the job to get right for you.

Whether you’re furnishing a room, renovating your kitchen, or building new, I’d love to help you start with a plan instead of a guess. Submit an inquiry here and let’s talk about your project.
