Creating versatile and multipurpose spaces in your home has always been important. Being able to utilize a room for more than its original purpose can be extremely helpful – especially this year!
The pandemic has taken the idea of having versatile areas in our homes to a whole new level. Kitchens have become science labs, dining room tables have turned into home offices, and bedrooms have become personal gyms! Since we are increasingly spending more and more time at home, we want to make sure each room in the house can serve multiple uses. Today we’re going to shed some light on why these multipurpose spaces are important, and how you, too, can make traditional areas of your home functional for many different purposes because if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we need to be prepared to adapt to sudden changes!
Adding more storage space in rooms like the office, kitchen, or playroom can be handy in the event of schools closing again. The best thing is that storage doesn’t have to be ugly…it doesn’t even have to look like storage! There are so many beautiful storage options out there that will conceal your excess items and blend into the design of a room. Perfect when you suddenly need to turn an office into a homeschooling classroom!
Keeping a cohesive design throughout the home can be helpful when having to move things around or switch items from room to room. This will ensure that even if you do have to do a little rearranging, everything will match and look fabulous.
Zoning will help differentiate between the multiple uses of a room. For example, if you have a desk in your bedroom that serves as your “home office,” consider laying down a rug to make the area more clear. Adding a divider or curtain can also be helpful to create a sense of separation between where you work and where you sleep in this case!
Investing in pieces of furniture that will serve multiple uses is a great way prepare your home for sudden changes! One of the most popular ways to create multipurpose spaces is by installing a murphy bed that folds up to the wall. Sleeper sofas and chairs are also great items to take into consideration. These can all be customized to blend right into the overall design of your home. This way, you can utilize a room as a home office, play area, or whatever fits your needs, while having a spare sleeping arrangement ready to go!
If you don’t have a guest bedroom in your current home, it’s likely that you’ll use another space to host your visitors from time to time. Keeping their comfort in mind when designing a functional, multi-use space is simple and makes things a lot easier in the long run. Adding in extra storage so they have a place to keep their things is a great start. Next, consider placing an end table next to a sleeper sofa, if you have one, to serve as a makeshift nightstand. Finishing the room with cozy elements like lamps and blankets will make it suitable for any guest!
Something super important to keep in mind when ensuring a room is ready to serve several different purposes is keeping things organized! When a room serves as a guest room, home office, playroom, and potentially more, it will inevitably accumulate clutter. Every few months, go through the “stuff” that collects in your multi-purpose space and put it back where it belongs. It’s okay to get rid of a few things too to make sure the space is as clean as possible and ready for whatever it needs to be next!
During these crazy times, don’t sacrifice any space in your home! With practicality and proper design in mind, you can easily convert any room in the house into a multipurpose space, so you don’t feel overwhelmed with clutter and inconsistency. Focus on using the space that you do have to live comfortably and functionally in any given situation!
